screen settings on movie playback

Postby billberet on Tue Dec 02, 2008 4:42 am

ok, when i play a dvd in windows with cyberlink dvd7.3 ultra i get the correct aspect ratio on the plasma
when i open up xlobby and play the same file with the cyberlink dvd graph the plasma screen is already 16:9 but the video being rendered has the additional black bar on the top and bottom the the picture is squished even further. is there a way to have the default player play the dvd the same way it is played in cyberlink dvd7.3 ultra outside of xlobby (on the plasma)

the media player in xlobby is rendering correctly, with small top and bottom bar on the touchscreen.
but the plasma has the extra top and bottom bar added to the existing bar, making it thicker squishing the video

is this where i have to customize the graph? or is it something else.

when i hit f2 and bring up the media player tab i have cyberlink powerdvd6+ac3 filter, vmr7, vmr9, and straight power dvd6+
i tried all of these, and all have the same top and bottom bar. i do not have a powerdvd7 in my list, only 6 if that makes any issues.
when i configure the powerdvd filter i get
video renderer
default sound device
ac3 filter
cyberlink video/sp decoder
dvd navigator

do any of the menu options shown above help me with the aspect ratio?
i should only have a 1 3/8 inch bar on the bottom and top, but in xlobby i have a 4 inch bar squishing the video.

as an example, i played a movie that has a circle in it. i paused the dvd

on the touchscreen i took my ruler and it was still a circle, but onthe plasma it was egg shapped
the top and bottom bars were squishing my circle into an egg.

any ideas? it only happens on dvd's
when i play avi files, they go full screen, no bars.

the issue is only with movie playback

Bill look at this.

Video size\scaling feature added to the Media Player for movies, works for 16:9 widescreen playback only, 4:3 is not adjustable at the moment. Presss F5 five times, while in media player full screen, to increase vertical height keep pressing F5, to shrink Vertical Height press F6, Decrease Horizontal Width press F7, Decrease Horizontal width press F8 to increase width, F9 Zoom in, F10 Zoom out, F11 will Reset back to factory default. Restarting xLobby will save the new video size settings.

hey wes

will this affect the output on the plasma
because i have no issues with the touchscreen, that is rendering correctly.
it's only the component video out going to the plasma that has the issue.

wife is making me go to bed, so i'll have to test it out tomorrow
:)
thanks again

This will only effect movie playback rendering.

Bill,

Here is a link for testing your surround sound.

ok when i run this page, is it a configuration for xlobby or at the hardware level.
meaning, should i get the surround working outside of xlobby first.

in cyberlink, if i get the 5.1 working, will it automatically work in xlobby, or do i have to configure the audio there as well?
i am going to make the default sound device use the spdif output, since that is what my xlobby is using.

Bill,

You have to change the audio settings in the xLobby media player.

i tried the f5, f6,f7 scenarios
on the touchscreen, the image became wide and narrow, small and tall. just as it supposed too.
on the plasma, it half worked
for every 5 taps of the key, the plasma would move once, but when i had the width correct, i needed to correct the height. so when i was tapping the function keys, to make the image taller to get rid of the squishing, it put bars on the left and right side, so the whole image got smaller, there was a black border around the entire picture. the aspect ratio was correct, but the movie looked like it was in a picture frame.

is this correct, the way the plasma is acting.
or can it be i am not using cyberlink 7 ultra, in xlobby i am using cyberlink 6+ graph

Bill,

A couple questions.

1. I assume you are using the ATI card you purchased (Y/N)
2. I thought you rendered video only on the plasma and touchscreen is only control (Y/N)
3. Does the gui fill the plasma display from top to bottom (Y/N)

The F keys will only effect the video rendering window not the skin. If you have the video card setup for mirrored output
then what resolution is the touchscreen set at and what resolution is the plasma set at.

ok here you go

1. I assume you are using the ATI card you purchased (Y/N)
correct, i am using Radeon HD 3870, at the hardware level i have the plasma set as theater mode, where any video being played gets sent to that device. I have the property of the plasma set to keep the aspect ratio of the source
2. I thought you rendered video only on the plasma and touchscreen is only control (Y/N)
correct, xlobby main screen is the touchscreen, so when i am in media player, i see the window version of the movie with all the controls, the F keys move the video on the touchscreen as well as the plasma
3. Does the gui fill the plasma display from top to bottom (Y/N)
in xlobby, if i make the plasma my primary display, xlobby menu shows on the screen from edge to edge.
but i keep xlobby on the touch screen only.

then when i've had enough i hit F11 to reset, and i get the full width, with top and bottom bars squishing the image to an egg shape.
it happens in this order
f11 - reset (gives me full width, with top and bottom bars)
f5 - i hit 5 times, the picture in the media player starts to enlarge vertically as many times as i hit the button, but the plasma only enlarges vertically once.
f5 - touchscreen enlarges more, plasma now displays vertical bars, and gives me the picture frame effect, but aspect ratio is correct
f5 - touchscreen is streatched out vertically loosing aspect ratio, but plasma picture frame gets larger, keeping aspect ratio of the image while the vertical and horizontal bars get thicker, essentially video images gets smaller (staying in 16:9 ratio)

The F keys will only effect the video rendering window not the skin. If you have the video card setup for mirrored output
then what resolution is the touchscreen set at and what resolution is the plasma set at.

i am not doing mirrored output, i used extended desktop, this way i can have the proper resolution on the plasma.
plasma is set for 1280x720
and touchscreen is 800x600
within windows, the plasma has no bars, i have full screen if i bring up any window and drag it to the plasma, i can move it from corner to corner. outside of xlobby.
while in xlobby, the plasma will have the windows background on the screen, still no bars, looks normal, until i press play, then the video gets pushed and i have the picture effect with the borders. if i increase height and width of the video being rendered, it will start to increase, then start get squished. while the video on the touchscreen is still increasing normally with the F keys.

this only happens during movie playback, when i play avi files, they stretch to full screen, but i'm not concerned about that yet. it's on the ta-do list, i know. since most of my video's are 4x3.

does it have to do with the movie.

some movies, i can scale untill all the bars are gone
while other movies give me the picture frame effect.

could the issue be how the movie is encoded?

i think i found my issue, i have to be careful when i download my movies.
i would say 60% of them are PAL not ntsc

my ntsc version have no problem scalling and i can view fullscreen
the Pal versions have the bars.

i usually burn my iso's to dvd, so the PAL never came into question cause i convert them when i burn.
but because i'm playing the iso directly, it keeps the PAL format.

let me try some more NTSC movies, i'm sure it will work fine.
:)
seems the issue was between the keyboard and the chair.

Bill,

Glad you figured it out, I just assumed all your content was NTSC DVDs that were ripped into your system.

I was still scratching my head on this one......... :?
