rs-232 - understanding

I have collected some manufactures documentation for RS-232 PC control over
a few products I own and I am starting to incorporate that control into XL.
The documentation for some components is better then others. I have some
codes that I have successfully incorporated into XL however others I am
missing some knowledge to complete my task at hand. The XL portion of the
task has been working out well with the help of one of Wes's posts.

Maybe someone here with a little more experience could help me out?

Using my Optoma H78DC3 projector as an example

The interface setting is straight forward.. I believe I got that much.
Although how do I calculate what the command sequence would be to power on
the unit?
I have located a few other examples of other codes although it's not clear
to me how the data string was calculated.
In need of a little schooling here. I really want to lean how to do this..

Try the following

1. Make sure the communications settings are as follows:

Baud Rate : 9600
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control : None

2. RS232 ASCII Strings, the "\r" after the ASCII string provides a carraige return.

Example turn power on (Timer Delays between the OK may be required)
OKOKOKOKOK\r

Example turn power off
* 0 002\r

Example Menu
* 0 IR 008\r

Please let me know if this works, if not I can try it on our projector tomorrow.

I did not have any luck.. could you please test?
Tested my port and cable with other rs-232 commands to my receiver and it worked. So clearly its something int he way I am providing the command.
Tried, On, Off, menu: all had no response from the projector.

Also, how do you add a timer in-between a single sting? I see the timer in the list of commands but how is XL instructed to insert that timer in-between string commands like 'OKOKOKOKOK' ?

We had to do this for our Optoma projector, our RS232 commands are different then yours but the structure is similar

I believe I was reaching and trying a few combinations at the time I captured the image. Checked again to be sure, as well as the 'Power On' command... still no response.

There isn't anything in the Optoma service menu I have to switch on to be able to accept rs-232 commands is there?

I'm really at a loss.. I must be doing something wrong. Any other ideas I can try?

What kind of RS232 connector is on your unit DB9, 9 pin or a 3 pin mini din style. In any case what cable connects between your serial port and the projector and what is the distance between the projector.

the distance is ~25', standard DB-9, just like the other end going to the PC.
Again, using the same cable I was able to transmit codes to my Harmon Kardon receiver without issue.

Yes sir. modified my commands for the HK receiver using that port to be sure.

Lets try this. Try omitting the spaces, you may have to call Optoma directly, maybe the RS232 port is dead or we are missing some other details of sending the correct strings or the command structure has changed. In any case every product we have tested via RS232 with xLobby has worked.

Power off: *0IR002\r

I tried no spaces and only some spaces before, but I will try again tonight.

Question:
Is it possible to read the IR code from the manufactures remote and convert that code into an rs232 command string into XL? I have all these codes already programed in my MX3000 Universal remote, not sure if that helps?

I also saw these guys http://rs232codes.com/
They offer an IR to rs-232 hardware.. thinking maybe I can generate my database of rs-232 codes to build into XL?

Does Calrad offer similar hardware?

My crestron contact confirmed the same codes we have with the carriage return. Not sure why your unit is not working, maybe the RS232 port is bad. Try a short premade RS232 cable between the projector and a PC using hyperterminal if you still have issues most likely its the projector or the codes listed are incorrect.
